The answer is a heat pump system that heats without burning fuel! It’s a new paradigm based on a proven technology that’s grown in popularity across Canada and Europe and is gaining ground in the US.
Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it. Widespread adoption will drive huge reductions in greenhouse gases and clear our air. Heat pumps can be air source or ground source (geothermal). Geothermal ones used to cost more than air source ones due to the expense of installing the loop system. BUT NOW, in New York State only, they are equal to or cost less due to the generous federal and state income tax credits and electric utility rebates. See incentives.
When you replace your furnace or boiler with a heat pump you will slash or eliminate your fossil fuel bill, since heat pumps are 3-5 times more efficient and run on electricity.
You can offset your increased consumption by generating your own power with solar panels, reducing your net utility costs. And adding battery storage will enhance your resiliency.
All-electric is a growing trend as people choose to go fossil fuel-free, or even achieve net-zero energy and emissions. All-electric does not mean expensive when heating with heat pumps.
